I have looked in the local Radio Shack and other local stores for a 25-30' DB9 cable and haven't been able to find one. Does anyone know where I might be able to find one?

You can purchase two db9 to rj45 adapters and then run a long cat5 patch cable and just plug it in at each end. I use them a lot for serial connections out of my phone systems.

We always made our own, if an off-the-shelf option did not exist. Radio Shack (used to) sell blank connectors. We would solder them up, creating whatever wiring scheme we needed.

Parts Express has all of the D-sub connectors with solder pins as well.

I'd also check out Mouser Electronics, at least to do some price comparison.
