i have a friend that is changing his customers sevice from verizon to att verizon has thir smart jack in the room with the legend att has their smart jack in the basement to run to the legend does he need all 4 pairs or can he just use the blues and greens i suggested he run full cat5 cable can he get by with the 2 pair thats in the smart jack ?

The smart jack just uses pins 1&2 and 4&5 rec and trans respectively. What makes it smart is the shorting bar which loops it back to the far end to keep the equipment in sync. Bill

so should he just extend the 4 wires from the smart jack upstairs and move the jack up
