I am considering a T1/DS1 for my residence. Does anyone have comments on what I should know before having one installed (besides the cost)?

You need to make sure that the carrier can actually provide the service to your residence.

I have seen numerous people get all lathered up over it and them it all of sudden isn't possible.

If you actually need that type of service you will also have to worry about repairs if something happens. I know they don't fix my T1 as fast as an actual business circuit frown

OK I am assuming you are speaking about data service not voice. So here I go.

Once you find out whether or not you can get the service to your house. Most carriers will give you the option of a managed router or not. If you choose not to have the managed router you will need to supply your own T1 router. In this case you would need to know what protocol they are going you use. More than likely Frame Relay. But still verify. If Frame Relay I would advise an Adtran Router. Just be sure to have the latest software release which is downloadable from the adtran website. Easy to program and manage.

Also will generally give you 1 public ip to your router. If you need more such as you are running an exchange server and web server on different servers then you will probably want to get more than 1 IP.

I also advise you invest in a good Ethernet router/Firewall. Do not have the carrier run your nat or port forwarding if need. This just causes headaches when you need something else forwarded.

Everything else is pretty basic. Run your ethernet cables and away you go.

I work for a CLEC and we've installed several T1's at residences over the years. The main issue is extending the wiring from where the service comes in (typically outside by the electric meter) to wherever the router goes.

Seen it done pretty often actually…

Technology to deliver DS1 signal over copper spans over pretty long distances is getting very easy to come by… Not very often anymore we have to turn a customer down for not having the pairs and/or equipment to provide service.

Time to Repair (or install) should NOT be a factor either outside of access to the home issues. The issues with installs in the home that I have seen or heard were all due to no one being there.

“besides the cost” … wow, that’s a mouthful right there.

If the purpouse of that T1 is a speed why don't you get SDSL of up to 3Meg twice as fast as T1? But maybe CO cann't deliver speed you are trying to get? Then why you are not concidering Voice and Data over cable TV? Still faster then your T1! I don't think you have to get T1. Besides the price it will go down much often then any SDSL or cable.
