We have picked up some basic wiring & testing work from a local carrier. One of their requirements is that we purchase either a TB 2209 or TB 950 OR THEIR EQUIVALENT, with the ability to "a. make voice AND data test calls back through an Adtran or standard d-mark, b. have emulation settings for 5E, N1, N2, or N3 switch"
We have never been on the testing side of a T1/PRI, and have a couple of questions. 1. The 2209 is available in a refurb, but it's very hard to tell which options are required to accomplish the tasks listed above, and the refurb dealers can't tell us. 2. The 2209 seems to be a much more practical piece of equipment than the 950, and seems to be MUCH less expensive; comments? 3. Is there yet a different piece of equipment that we should be considering? There has been great mention on here of the TPI 570; does this fit the same bill, but better?
Cost is a concern, as they will be passing us 15-20 calls a month, most of which should not require the equipment. It will probably be high-volume low profit work, so we really don't want to invest $10k in a piece of equipment until it is certain that this will be worthwhile.
Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,
Chuck

I work for the big V and have been using the JDSU(formerly Acterna) HST-3000 test set for about 2.5 years now and love it. There are 5 in our gang and not a single complaint. They take all the abuse that we can throw at them and keep on ticking. I have dropped mine on concrete from about 4 feet up and it did not skip a beat. It has replaced my 2209 (brand new only used for a month), TPI 560b, dynatel, sidekick, and transmission test set. The only thing it does not test yet is optical ckt's and ethernet but, the rep said they are in the works.

The TTC/TPI-570 is a great product, however it's just not nearly as portable or durable as the HST-3000.

So the HST-3000 sounds like the product of choice, and the price isn't much different than the 570... Can someone point me at the options we need on the unit to meet the specs detailed above, as well as any we might want to make sure are included for other purposes?

It would be worthwhile speaking with a JDSU sales person. Just a few extra points: When comparing different test equipment, keep in mind the HST-3000 can be purchased in an 'all-in-one' package, or custom-configured to support your specific needs, and later upgraded with other options as needed. Example: If you were to select the HST-3000 for testing PRIs, you need the PRI analysis software option. Here\'s some great literature on the 3000 that may help.
