Hi All! First off, I am an IT guy, so this telecom stuff is kind of like a parallel universe to me, but I'll try to state my problem the best I can.
I have a hotel that recently found out from random customers that they could not get through to the main number - they got a fast busy or "can't connect as dialed message". These callers are primarily from adjacent area codes to our own. Our telecom maintenance company sent a tech out and checked the T1 and found no problems there. AT&T has also checked the T1 on property and found nothing wrong. Their guess is something to do with "translations on our T1".
We have opened a number of trouble tickets with AT&T for this and each have been closed the next day. We are kind of stuck in a stalemate and missing customers' calls in the meantime. So as I was Googling the problem, I came across this site which seems to be packed with some real telecom talent. I am hoping someone has at least heard of this problem and can perhaps point me in the right direction or offer a suggestion or two.
Any thoughts would be most appreciated! Thanks.

It's probably not the T-1. They can test from the trunks to your PBX to see if the calls complete, if they do it's an AT&T problem.
I'd about bet you have an incompatibility in signaling.
So if you've been reporting the T-1 that is why they are testing good, report the trunks.

Your customers told you what the problem is. You have to explain that problem to your provider. The light will come on that they have a translation issue but only from certain area and/or office codes. It does happen but rarely!

were these numbers recently taken from another company? could be an LNP issue meaning your numbers are living in two different switches. Provide them call examples that are failing, originating and term numbers. that should be enough to get them started
I Swear I did not touch anything

Thanks guys for the posts and great info. We have had the number at the property for many years. We have recorded all the numbers having trouble and our telecom maintenance company is testing calls from their customers in those area codes and can reproduce the problem. Will be passing on your information as well. Thanks again!

Since you can reproduce the problem, see if calls from those areas fail to other numbers in the same office code (nxx) as your motel. If these calls fail then you need to see if the calls are all coming to you from the same long distance provider. Try making a call from one of the phones that has the problem, using a dial around code to get a different carrier. This will lead you on the path to finding where the problem lies.
