I want to split a voice cable into 2 RJ14s. My boss thinks we should run separate cables and not split anything. This is just a big fat waste of money in my opinion.
So, anyway, she wants me to find proof that splitting the voice does not decrease the integrity of the cable.
Do any of you have a Lucent Cabling guide? I know when they first came out with their CPE phone systems they had a cable standards guide that discussed splitting the voice cable into RJ11s or RJ14s. I really need to find this document. I also need a drawing of a cat5e voice cable split to 2 RJ14s.
Any help you can give me would be much appreciated!!!

I have done this many of times. Wired with Cat5 and use Blue White/Blue for first pair and Orange White/Orange for second pair on a two jack wallplate with no problems. Normally ran phone on first pair and a fax on the second pair. Don't think you would even notice a problem if using one for data line(modem). Sorry but I don't have a Lucent Cabling guide

Well if you want to stay with todays standards then you should run a new cable. I have been wiring for 17 years and hate when some one splits out a cable. If your current system is not up to standard then go for it. But when you have spent the money on a new system and just need 1 more outlet at a desk don't mess things up by splitting them out. By the way check out, for starters, https://www.bicsi.org/ for more info on this

i too have split many cables in my day. however usually on an existing wiring plant. if you are bidding a job to BICSI specs or just installing a new system never split because, it is a lot easier to get the wiring done on the beginning. it costs a lot more in time and money to add a run later. how are going to look to your boss if you need a modem, fax etc. at one of the locations you split? good luck

If this is existing for regular old phone along with a modem or fax AND it is in the same gang box (wired on the same faceplate), go for it. The only way I hate the way some people split their cable is up in the ceiling then run it to another jack. When your dealing with regular phones and voice, it causes no problems.

Siemon makes some plug-in splitters. You can get the benefit of two jacks without even removing the faceplate. If their units won't work, you can make your own with an RJ45 end, short length of cable and two jacks.

i believe in the 1 cable per wk station. i think we should always think future, the xtra cost is worth it.Some business dont stay long at their location and really dont care about the cabling. so the network cabling gets nestled. You could save ur self some money down the road. Good luck!

Hmmmm. Well the original post is almost 4 years old. I'm sure he's pulled the cable and probably moved to a different job by now. But, welcome to the board.
