How come the copper price is crazy right now? The best deal I saw is $66 per 1000 FT for Cat5e Cable on cyberxlink.com. Any one can tell me other places has the better price than that?Thank you.

CableGuy714:

You need to provide a complete profile before we can go into detail with you on this. In the meantime, I will share a few comments:

Home Depot sent me a commercial purchaser flyer today advertising a similar price for C5e riser-rated (PVC, type CMR). The price you have seen MUST be for PVC, as in non-plenum cable becuase the plenum-rated stuff is approaching three times that on a good day. Plenum-rated (CMP) is pretty much all that can legally be used in most office buildings, so you should forget about the $66.00 stuff.

Apparently, there is a severe copper shortage, coupled with the increase in petroleum costs (a major component in the manufacture of plastics), it's all going up. We have actually doccumented a 50% increase in cable cost over the past nine months.

It's reached the point where it's not wise to honor price quotes on jobs for more than a week, since I have seen three dramatic increases in one month. We had to change our policies accordingly.

That's interesting. I was in the big, orange box up here over the weekend. There were a couple of electrical contractors buying up all of the NM on the shelves. Took a peak at the Cat5E, which I hadn't done in several months. At that time, it was about $53. Yesterday - $91!
