Any suggestion for an inexpensive switch that offers POE??. I only need to power one device so even an adapter of some sort would be acceptable.

I know Linksys makes a single port POE adapter as well as POE switches, most manufacturers should have POE adapters for their equipment.

Belden, Panduit and Powerdsine make Power over Ethernet injectors too. These are also called mid-span power source equipment or PSE if you want to get fancy.

If you are interested in seeing a replay of a recent webcast about Power over Ethernet, go to

Recently had a need to power a single POE IP camera. There are a lot of injectors out there, but we found that many of them are not 802.3af compatible. We ended up going with THIS for around $30.

Worked out fine.

Now, if you can just stomach buying from a place call Voipsupply.com!

Yes those are very handy.

A lot of power injectors are not IEEE 802.3af compatible because a lot of powered equipment is not 802.3af compatible. This includes older Cisco VoIP phones. The 802.3af standard calls for power to be supplied at 48 volts DC at a maximum of 350 milliwatts. This comes to 15 watts. There is equipment out there that requires 12 volts, 24 volts, or more than 15 watts, according to the Belden site.

There is also a recognition signal that must be sent by the powered equipment before the power injector will provide power. This is to protect the equipment.

“They” are now working on an IEEE standard to supply more than 15 watts over Ethernet for equipment that requires it. Pan-tilt-zoom internet cameras generally do. The new standard is called Power Over Ethernet Plus.

Netgear offers a couple of their smaller unmanaged switches with POE.. ( FS-108P 8 ports-4 w/POE,
FS116 16 ports-8- w/POE)

or you can use an POE injector.
