Hello.

Have any of you guys worked wireless routers and access points with MIMO technology which is suppose to increase the range by 10X the normal range? They show diagrams of it bouncing the signal off the walls to extend range.

[Linked Image from netgear.com]

For example the Netgear WPN824

Do you know if you need the special network adapters or is that only needed if you want extra speed?

I am primarily concerned about getting standards speeds over extended range of the entire house rather than speed.

Do you know if I can use my regular centrino laptop wireless feature for the extended range or if I need to pick up one of the netgear matching network adapter cards for all my computers?

Thanks.

I am moving this to the General category. I think you will get a better response there. :thumb:

NO, you do not need a special card for MIMO enhanced routers. They are backwards compatible with any b/g enabled device, however if you wish to take advantage of the 108Mps then you will need a card.

PS. Whatever you do stay away from the Pre-N crap.

Yeah, everyone said the Pre-N stuff is junk and they don't have their act together.

Maybe I can't get the entire house wired with CAT 5 however I may be able to place multiple Wireless access points around the house to get all area some internet coverage.

What happens if 2 wireless routers in the same house and overlap on certain area? Does this cause interference or is there a way on the settings to use the access point which gives you the strongest signal?

Thanks for your help.

So the increase in MIMO range will work with any wireless adapter.

The special Rangemax wireless adapters are for the increase in speed only(not range)

Honestly, the speed is not really a problem in my house, its the fact that my current junky D-link DI-524(I think) it not able to reach the distance.

Hopefully if I add one of these Netgear in a different area of the house, they can each cover a different piece of the house.

Please let me know

Thanks

There is absolutely no guarantee in coverage for any wireless product; way too many unforeseen and undetectable factors, all you can do is try.

Why was this moved here? How about the networking forum?
