Well, getting into my first SIP lines. and I ge to manage the router.

I am delving into the QoS part and starting to realize just how much I don't know.

A lot of this looked real simple on the surface but, once I started delving into it I realized there is a lot more to it.

We use Adtran products, and Adtran;s support is great, but I figured if I post on here my trials, questions and solutions, we could all benefit smile

So, first the lay out:

Site A info
T-1 carrying up to 14 SIP channels directly into the phone system.
Host about 30 - 40 computers and has a Domain Controller.
VPN to Site B

Site B info
DSL (Up to 20megDL/2megUL) been seeing about 1/2 - 3/4 of that "Up to".

Second Phone system that is networked to main system. (5 local POTS that route to AA in main system)

About 10 local computers on VLAN 1 that talks to the DC at site A.
3 computers on VLAN 2 that are for public use only.

So I want to tackle this one chunk at a time.

Question 1. at site B, what would yo recommend as the total average bandwidth and the burst?

Bandwidth for the VPN in total? Or just voice traffic? It sounds like there would be no more the 500Kbps in voice traffic to the remote site...

You need to find out what Priorty level the provider is sending on the SIP lines and make sure your existing VLAN that is traveling over that same WAN is below that level.

Local network traffic is less of a problem.

@telemarv....That was going to be a follow up question and statement. smile

Question is defining the bandwidth at site "B" WAN port for traffic shaping purposes. I figured 1000000 average and 1500000 burst. Yeah it might limit what "may" be available but figured whith it being so "dynamic" better to err on the conservative side.

So that being said I created an ACL for RTP traffic and assigned it 65% of bandwidth and set them to expedited forwarding. Then for VLAN 2 (The public computers that we could care less how slow they go) I set to 20% of remaining. And then the rest of the traffic get 80% of remaining.

Voice traffic should get more than half the bandwidth, and be gauanteed to go first across VPN.
The office computers will slow down a bit if it goes out the WAN or across VPN but they are ok with that.
The public computers will go to a crawl about (about 100k if my math is correct)but they are by no means paying customers
