Has anyone else experienced problems dialing toll free numbers this past week?

When dialing certain toll free numbers (seems to be mostly Verizon, Global Crossing, maybe others) the caller would get either nothing, or some static, or if the call connected there was so much distortion the call was not usable.

We've been working the past couple of days to see if this was internal to our VoIP system or if it was a problem with the LEC or toll free number provider.

Finally this afternoon, our LEC called to say they found a problem with the carrier and they did a temp fix and would work on it more this weekend. We have not experienced another failure but the calls are not as clear.

At lunch today I was at Graybar picking up some items and we tried dialing some of the same numbers and got the same problem so we are not the only ones having the problem.

Some example numbers: 800-Verizon, 877-462-8188, 877-953-9259.

Last, is there a number you can dial where you can input a toll free number and it tell you what carrier provides that number? I got one number while talking with a repair tech 800-959-2000 but I think this is only for Ameritech area and I'm in an old Bell South area.

Thanks!

Okee Dokee...no replies...gee did I forget to put deodorant on this morn??

Anyway, our LEC (CLEC actually) US LEC/Paetec/Windstream whoever they are this month...reported back that "the carrier" found a problem and has busied out the offending trunk until repairs can be made.

My guess is its a Verizon problem and it will stay busied out until they can sell it! LOL!!! hahahaha...

I used to use 1-700-555-4141 but that doesn't work for me anymore.

Guys, I think you misunderstood DT98's question. He needs a resource to identify the service provider carrying a specific toll-free number, not to identify the Inter-Lata toll carrier.

700-555-4141 was never a secret number. Verizon gave it out openly for customers to verify their PIC assignment all the time.

1-700-555-4141 works in my part of Canada (MTS Allstream) to verify who your long distance provider is. The number is listed in the front of the white pages in the telco information section.

It's was right inside the front cover of Verizon's telephone directory until they stopped printing the white pages, along with instructions for verifying the LPIC. No secret in these parts, but it still doesn't work anymore.
