I am not a telephone professional, but I am a computer programmer providing supporting to a non-profit agency that provides funding for spay/neuter services for animals. They have a store with two phone lines, one for voice and the other for credit card transmissions. The lines are set up so that when the voice line is busy, the call rolls over to the fax line. What type of equipment needs to be installed so that when the voice call rolls over to the fax line, the caller does not get the fax tone?

I hope that I have explained this appropriately. Thank you for any help and advice on this question.

Well , do they use the second line for voice also or is it just for Credit Cards/Fax's? If it's just for CC/Fax then have the local provider take them out of the hunt group, if they use it for voice also you can get a Stick (auto fax switch) but even with this it will go to the fax after the programmed rings if its a voice call.

install the "stick" or line share device as DTMF stated and all your troubles will be done.

You could just set the Fax machine for manual answer and press the receive button when you actually receive a fax.

One solution I have provided for some customers is to have Distinctive Ring service added to the second line. This will give you two phone numbers on the second line, one of which can be advertised as the FAX number. Then put a distinctive ring switch (for example, Multi-Tech SR-2) on the line. When a call comes in for the fax, the distinctive ring switch will route the call to the fax machine. Otherwise, all calls on the second line will go to the telephone. Another nice feature of the distinctive ring switch is "barge protection" which prevents you from picking up the line in the middle of a fax transmission, and, vise-versa, prevents the fax machine from barging in on a voice conversation.
