Porting is transferring a telephone number from one service provider to another.
Forwarding is just sending calls destined for one number to another.
What exactly is "port forwarding"? :shrug:

I believe Port forwarding is being used in exchange for Call forwarding.
(Port forwarding is actually what you do in a router to take an outside port, 8080 for example, and forward all traffic bound to that port to a specific IP or MAC address)
AND, You should look up LNP (local number portability) and see if your provider supports it.

Port forwarding is the act of taking an external data packet presented to a firewall/router and routing it to a private internal IP address.

I think he means to port the number to another carrier.

My toll-free number, and any numbers we install has a RING TO number. That could be your land line, a VoIP number, or even your cell phone. It takes a couple of days, usually, to change the Ring to number.
