communications error has to be the cable or the programming parameters and you have them set right according to your post. I would check that cable.

You are plugged in the maintenance port right, it is for programming. It is the bottum plug on the CPU. If your not in that one try it.

Yes, I'm plugged into the RS -232 port 1 on the DXCPU-68k card. It's the same port that the DXMD modem is plugged into so I'll ASSume it's the maintenance port.

I've created another adapter per the above specs and tried it again. Same error message.

I open the switch and took another look see.

The DXCPU-68K card in my unit does not have a port marked maintenance.

It has the dip switches you mentioned earlier - all in the off position

It has four ports (1)RS232 1 (2)RS232 (3)Relay 1 & 2 (4) Relay 3 & 4

Make sure your settings are correct.
9600 8N1 com1. You only need 3 wires. Transmit, receive and signal ground. I have 4 DB9 connectors made and I jack into Comdial on regular basis. Use hyperterm initially. Colors red-2 grn-3 blk-5 and I use a 4-pin crossover line cord.
Possible combinations. There are no more!
red-2 grn-3 blk-5
red-3 grn-2 blk-5
red-2 grn-3 yel-5
red-3 grn-2 yel-5
Tape off all other wires individually.
If the machine talks to you but in machine lang your settings are wrong and your pinout is correct.
If the DXP is very busy, the com port may not react. The com priority from the processor is extremely low.

Another issue is compatibility of the VMMI software to the DXP. What is your software level and has it been converted to CCB?

I'll create an adapter with the below specs when I return to work on Monday. So I should use the 2 pair (4 wire) cross over cable with this new adapter?

As for the COmdial version, I'm pretty sure it 13B. VMMI version I think is 15.

I'll try with hyperterm first and if it works I can use the VMMI app. For a newbie like myself the GUI is nice.

I don't think it's your cable or DB9, the DB9 and cord I gave you the configuration for is the same as the kit that Comdial will send you. If you look at the pin readouts that jwooten posted it's the same as the one I posted. The only difference is that it doesn't have the 3rd pair,which doesn't get used (not an issue)
As jwooten said you should try the hyperterm, it always gets in. Look at your DB9 and if it's right don't waste another one just use a 2pair cord and that will work fine. Let us know what happens. Personally, and I think jwooten would agree you should bag VMMI and go with the hyperterm.

The Vmmi program has to be used to archive the database.

The Vmmi program was pretty good until version 16 and up came out.

I guess I should have stated it better, what I meant was use heyperterm initially. Thanks for catching my miss direction Tipandring.
