When I program the DSU/DSUII I always do it through the phone, but I would like to start using a laptop to program. Can I pick up a pre made cable at somewhere's like Radio Shack or does Comdial sell them. The reason for so many questions on the DSUII is that after some training, I'm going to start offering it to my prospects. I'm just trying to get a thorough knoweldge of it from here, the DSUII course, and from hands on experience.

to prog. the dsu, you will need a good o' telephone cable, or patch cord...the fun part is finding a db9 connetor for the com port on the computer...i tried to make one w/ parts i got from radio shack...but that didnt work...so i just order one from my vendor, it was like 15-30 bux...

some electronic supply houses have a nine-pin female to RJ-11 adapter that will work.
The nine-pin end comes un-connected so you can wire it the way you like. We wire them so a standard reverse patch cord works with it. The DXP"s used to come with one from Comdial, if you have one of those it will work fine. I have not seen these at Radio Shack, but they have the piece parts to make one.

I used an RJ12 to db9 adapter
Black = pin7
red = pin3
green = pin2
yellow = Pin5
cut off white and blue = not used

and use a standard 4 conductor mounting cord plugged into com-1 on the system

I do the same thing as ttech, but i buy the RJ45 to db9 that way I can set them up for the different systems. It's all in the connections anyway.

TTech you are correct in the pin-out with a minor clearification if you will permit me to explain. [Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]
I would like to point out that the reason I do not give the colors to connect to pins is that you have a 50/50 chance of being right.
That adapter may be wired as "WECO" or "USOC" and both standards are exactly reversed. I can't remember which is which.
Also connecting pin 7 did on some Comdial products caused communication problems when there were other grounding problems with the system. If the following wire configuration doesn't work then connect the black to pin five, red to pin two, and green to pin three. I checked the ULR (nice site) but they did not specify WECO or USOC, but then most sites don't and I have never seen one marked either way.
