I am I.T. manager in a large real estate company with over 40 offices. I would like to learn more about comdial pbx systems as this is what we use in our offices. I would like to learn as much as I can in terms of installing, maintaining, programming adds, moves, changes, etc. We have someone else in the company who handles the phone systems. I spoke with comdial and they only offer training to dealers. I don't have a spare test system to experiment with either. We use dxp and fx systems and a test system would be expensive to purchase I am not sure of best way to proceed. Help.

The best way to proceed IMHO would be to find a local dealer who will work with you, train you, and do what you can't. Learn from them. I work with several companies and train their guys as I do the work they need.
You wouldn't expect a telcom tech to step in and be an IT person without some training would you? You can either screw things up and pay to get it fixed, or be up front and ask for training as the tech does what you need.

E-mail one of the moderators for this forum---markk, jwooten, cmdlguy or tipandring --if you don't get an answer soon here in the forum. I think markk is the closest to you--he's in PA. Phone support/training is the most cost effective way to do this IMHO. Learning a PBX is not the easiest thing in the world--but you have the background and the neans to do it. Take advantage of someone's experience---. It will save you money in the long run. Good Luck.

Whoops---sorry to put words in your mouth mark. For sure, the local dealer would be the best deal--hands on personal training & support. I assumed that he did not have that option available to him for some reason or other.

My only hesitation was that we have a person on staff who deals with phone systems and interfaces with the dealer. I didn't want our phone person or dealer to think I was treading on their turf. I know to sign up to take comdial courses I need to go through a dealer. I was hoping to just get started on my own through some demo software or some kind of beginner's guide to comdial phone systems. If you know of anything like this please let me know. thx!

YOu can buy a cheap one off of ebay or elsewhere and play around with it at your house. There is nothing like hands on, especially with a system that you wont mess anyting up in. Just learning to navigate through the menus is a big step. Also having the manuals is a big help. Then you can look through ALL of the previous posts, and see where other people had difficulty.

one thing you can do is to get familiar with the VMMI software.

You should be able to get this from your local dealer or your telco guy.

BigDog is right and when you get a copy of VMMI you should also see if they will give you a copy of the current database so you can explore how the switch is currently programmed.

Ok, thx! for all good info. I got copy of vmi and the database from phone guy. He doesn't want me to go in live in case I screw up something. I saw a comdial dpx system at usedphones.com. I was thinking about buying it. Thanks again!
