I need to purchase a phone system for me to experiment at home with to learn how to program phone systems, etc. It won't be used in production. I would also like to plug a regular analog phone line into it to practice with outside lines. I want to get the dpx as this is what we use at work. I saw a used comdial dpx system at usesphones.com for $500 for cabinet. My question is what else do I absolutely need in order to learn my want around phone systems. Also, what else would be good to buy while not trying to spend tons of money. I don't want to go much over $1200

Aside from the cabinet, I understand I need the following:
cpu card
line card
station card

Do I need these items. Do I need anything else. Where is best place to get used equipment. Any advice would be appreciated.

You need one other card; a services card DXSRV. You may need a power supply unles the include that in their main cabinet. You aren't going to be able to do it for less than 1200. You might keep an eye out on Ebay and hope someone doesn't know what they have. Its happened before.

You also stated that you want to test with analog telephones. I assume you me an industry standard telephone such as you have at home and not a Comdial analog telephone. In that case you will need a (DXIST16) or (DXIST8) card and a ring generator (DXRNG) as well. The link you posted showed a cabinet without a power supply (DXPSM), you will need that as well. The cabinet for $500 was a DXP and the one for $700 was a DXP-PLUS. The station and line cards can be used in either system but the CPU, services, power supply and ring generator are different from DXP to DXP-PLUS. If you can get a DXP-PLUS at a good price that would be the better choice since it will be easier to upgrade the software. Check what is available at the Sundance site first, these guys will make sure you get everything you need at a reasonable price. If there is anything else you need you can E-mail me. We stock some used systems.

Be carefull buying "refurbed" equipment.
There are many companies out there that buy Out of Service equipment, clean it up, and sell it as "refurbished" without ever even testing it.
Go with a reputable company, like Sundance, and make sure that you get at least a one year warranty.
As a side note, we have purchased "refurbished" phones with drink spills that were so bad all of the buttons stuck down. The outside looked great, but they had certainly never been tested. I could tell you many more horror stories....
Ask how long the company has been in business...

I don't work for usedphones.com... I live & work near them and have purchased Comdial gear from them. So far my experience with them has been positive....
