I had the same problem with some Dell laptops with XP Pro especially when trying to archive a database...What worked for us was to run compatibility wizard on VMMI 17d...We rolled it back to Windows 98 or 95, my memory fails me on which but it was one of them...

We have been having trouble with VMMI on a few of our Toshiba Laptops running Win XP Pro SP2. It would work for a while and then stop suddenly (almost any archive would cause the problem for sure), although we did get a windows error... "VMMI MFC Application Error"... never said much other than that the program vmmi.exe ended with an error. We switched the Shortcuts to run VMMI in "Win 98/ME" Compatibility mode and the problems seemed to just go away.

I had the problem with VMMI dropping off remote access for two FXIIs, was told to shut off SMDR auto report. That worked. Funny, I never had that problem on any other systems, Both systems made extensive use of the caller-ID ring-no- answer log, both fully expaned and short on RAM
