We have using the Comdial PC-Based Small Office for a number of years, but have recently been installing the analog Comdial Debut in a two port version.
The problem we are experiencing is as follows: When the voice mail shuts itself down for (presumably) file management, it does not come back up by itself. Consequently, the client calls because the voice mail is not answering calls, at which point we discover that the voice mail is at the VM prompt.
The software is 8.5.9.1.1. The installation manual didn't appear to include a start up command, so our installer simply typed "vmail", which worked. However, after reading some of the posts on the site, I am wondering if the problem could be caused by the fact that he was not starting the VM with the "GO VM" command. I spoke with Comdial tech support, and they thought it should be GO VMDEBUT. How could they, of all people, be unsure of this?
Any suggestions from Comdial gurus?
Thanks,
Mike

Had a few beers but pretty sure it's GOVM DEBUT. It should come back up on its own after the drop to DOS. Do a database scan cleanup and try to relieve corruption first.

Hi, Do yourself a favor and make sure you have a ups on the debut. They hate starting up and then getting powered down before a complete reboot.

That's an absolute Jim, never, under any circumstance, have a flash based VM on an unprotected (no battery back up) circuit. Unless you don't mind the repair or replacement expense. Mark

When you start the Debut with the VMAIL command from the C:/vm prompt the Debut starts and seems to run fine. But... when it goes to exit to dos and do a chkdsk at the pre determined time, Thursday at 3 am, it never makes it any farther than exiting voice mail and sitting at the C:/. You HAVE to start the voice mail from the C:/ prompt with with the GOVM DEBUT command. Weird, but the VMAIL command seems fine but it just exits and sits there doing nothing.....

VMAIL is just the "demo" and not the regular batch job as GOVM is. I have run into this before. Sounds like you have got it though! Make sure to get a UPS as suggested, I have to replace many of these that don't have one on them.

Thanks very much to all you guys. The correct command appears to have solved the problem. Additionally, it had not occured to me to install a UPS with the flash unit, so I will do so.
As and aside, the bizarre thing is that I went back to the manual that is shipped with the unit to search for the prompt instruction that I assumed I had overlooked, but nowhere in it can I find anything about a starting prompt. If this is so, it raises the issue of bad documentation to new heights.
Thanks Again,
Mike P

"verbatim debut" from c:\vm should also work.
