Welcome to the board. The first thing I would do is get a DSU manual(see MANUALS link on this site). The second thing to do is be prepared to be a bit frustrated if this is your first time for laptop programming on a DSU. Third thing--I think that you will need to plug into one of the COM ports (Data A or B--I can't remember which). I think there are diagrams in the manual for pin-outs. The first time we did it--it took two days to figure out. Forth--you will need to have a knowledge of programming the DSU.

If you are just going to program a few things-it's much easier (time-wise & sanity-wise) to program from a LCD phone. At any rate--you will need a manual.

HyperTerminal is OK for this programming--but since you didn't know that--I'm assumming you haven't done your due diligence. You should have a manual in front of you. Good Luck.

Thanks Racedog:

I have programmed many comdial from station 10. I do have a manual and can navigate thru the system. I am just interested in laptop programming and I'm certain I need a dongle to make the transition from the DB9 on the back of the laptop to the RS232 A port. Trying to identify and locate one of these adapters. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Wait & see if one of the regular Comdial mods chimes in. I have done this with about 6 or so of the DSUs that I have out there--but my memory is not serving me well. I think I went from a DB9 straight cable to an adapter that was DB9/4 pin mod. Then a 4 pin line cord to an RJ11 surface jack, then a 4 conductor line cord to the Data Port. I used the open surface jack to switch wires/terminals to see which ones worked. I have a little set-up made somehwere that I carried with me years ago--but I haven't done this in so many years---I'm afraid I have no idea where it's at.

It's not very sophisticated, but it seemed to take me a long time to set something up so that I could just hook it up. I just did what they tole me in the manual. Good Luck.

The pinout should be in the manual. I would do like was suggested and get ahold of a manual. Not only will it help you with bulding the adapter, but it will also help you with programming, so it's not all such a guessing game. If you depend on this system at all, it would be worth the money to have some actual instructions in front of you so you know how to undo what caused the phones to stop ringing, or something else service-affecting.

I can email you the instructions if you to build the db9 connector if you still need it. You can also buy one from Graybar for about 8 bucks.

Thank you Mark:

I have the manual for this system and it shows the pin outs, I thought maybe someone out there might know about an already assembled cable.

Does Graybar make one already to go?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Tony

Comdial makes one already to go. Graybar distributes it. That's the one that I was talking about in my last post.
