MLS are for the partner systems and MLX are for the merlin legend.

As well, MLS phones can br used on Legend R7 and Magix with an ETR-016 board

yes you use mls phones on a legend/Magix, but you don't all the features of partner or legend/magix phones and they can be a pain to program.
