Can you expand an FX-II with single mode fiber or does it have to be multimode? any help would be appreciated.

In general, single-mode fiber uses laser light sources, where multi-mode uses LEDs for the light source. I'm not a pro on the FX-II, but I seriously doubt that it incorporates laser. That capability would cost more than the entire phone system itself.

Single-mode fiber is used for long haul applications, such as those with LECs or long distance providers where miles of transmission distance is required.

With that being said, I am relatively confident that multi-mode is your only option in this application.

If you're stuck using SM fiber, you might look into a SM-MM converter, although it may be more costly or provide for more headaches down the road than just installing MM fiber.

Or you could expand via VOIP networking and connect via a standard SM network. If you must use SM fiber, I think this would be the best choice.

We encountered this problem a few years back. The SM-MM converters we found were relatively inexpensive and they were simply plug-n-play devices. email me if you still need assistance with this project.
