Hi, I have a Comdial DSU 0408 Model. I have caller ID data going into the DSU Com-B at 9600-8-N-1 and it is working fine. I would additionally like to have the phone system output incoming and outgoing call logs to a computer log (same as if going to a serial printer). Can this be done all on Com-B?

Much Appreciated!

Yep it's in the installation manual. If you don't have one you really need to get as it holds alot of valuable info.

Hmmm... must have missed it, I thought i read everything related to these functions. Ok, now I see on page 2-73 a diagram. That is indeed how I have it wired, except I don't have pins 7&8 shorted. I am getting unexpected results in that when I recieve a phone call it seems to be outputting data from calls received earlier in the day, perhaps from a buffer in the DSU? It doesn't seem as if shorting RTS & CTS on the CID unit according the the diagram would solve this issue. Could you offer me your expert opinion. I am a computer tech tinkering on a phone system someone gave me, it is my own, and not for profit. Thanks.

If you received a data stream of earlier calls then you have the SMDR hooked correctly. Yes it will buffer calls. The port is a little tricky in that the CID and SMDR use the same port. The SMDR uses the transmit pin and the CID uses the receive pin. I don't have the wiring cheat sheet available but I usually take the leads from each unit to a 6 pin jack and move until I get the desired results. Sounds like you are 50% of the way there.

That's how I have it wired. Of the 4 pins comprising COM-B on the punchdown block I have RX and SG going to the caller ID unit. I then have TX and SG going to the computer. Maybe I need to flush the buffer or something? Will fiddle with it today. Thanks.

Ok, got it hammered out. I had the CTS lead hooked up on the CID unit. It was jamming up communications. Now both CID and SMDR are working fine. The SMDR is indeed integrating the CID phone numbers into it's data. I can't find anything mentioning how to get the CID text included in the reporting too... can you confirm that? Thanks again for all your help.

You need to set CID distribution. It's disabled by default.

Thanks for the info, I have now enabled CID distribution but it still only sends the phone number, not the text with the name of the caller. Do you have any other hints as to if this can be made to output more than the phone number to the serial port? You can see the sample output below, I have numbered each line and created a legend.

Pretty cool, I have it logging realtime into an excel spreadsheet that anyone on our network can view (read only). Each month it creates a new file.

1. typical outgoing call (ext./line/date/duration/Number)
2. data from enabling CID distribution
3. moredata from enabling CID distribution
4. more data from enabling CID distribution
5. typical incoming call (ext./line/date/duration/rings/CID)

I believe you're gonna need a PCIU unit and software to accomplish that. I think I have a few NOS units on the shelf.
