Are the Comdial 8101n and 2101n interchangeable?

I'm not 100% sure on this---but I think that it has to do with the software you have.
Are you coming from or going to the 2101?? I think, if you are running Impression software to support the 2101---then you can run the 8101--however, if you're running Impact software to support the 8101--then you can't run the 2101.
Wait for one of the Comdial moderators to stop by and they may either support that theory or not. I may have it backwards.

Digital systems with Impression software would support Impression and Digitech series phones. Impact would support them all.
