Our system, at random times of the day, will drop all current calls and lose access to voicemail. This lasts for about two minutes, then VMail will come back up on the LCDs and all will be good. During the time VMail is not accessible, any attempts to dial an outside line or internal extension will result in a "Communication Error" on the LCDs of any phones attempting to dial. It happens enough to warrant looking for a fix as it has been affecting conference calls and other important business related calls. All I can find in the VM error log is a time and date stamped "6701 Serial link down. Attempting to re-establish", but these errors are nowhere near consistant with the times the system drops calls. We have 3 facilities, each with their own set of cabs, and when the problem occurs, it affects all 3 buildings. Could this possibly be an issue with a potentially bad serial adapter in the VM PC? If so, then why are live calls (not connecting with VM) dropped? Could it be a problem with our main facility's cabinet/cards where all outside calls are routed through? If so, then why would it affect internal calls? Wracking my brain trying to figure this one out.

You're probably not having a voice mail issue. If the displays of the phones are saying "No Communications" Then the phone system itself is resetting thus resetting the connections to the voicemail..both voice and serial. You have a problem with power or hardware in the main cabinet I'd bet. You'll have to pull status logs to find out what is happening.

I'd agree with RBF. Sounds like a main cabinet harware issue, either Power supply or CPU issue to me.

Just curious, did you ever determine the reason for this error? I have a comdial FX II system with a Keyvoice VM System. I have been having the same issue. I initially through that it was related to the VM PC so I had the serial card swapped out. This resolved the problem for about three weeks but then it came back. I did a full power down of the system and reset the cards in the cabinet. Problem gone... for about a month this time. Now it is back. The VM message prompt on the comdial phones will go blank every hour or so, for about three minutes and then it will come back up. Again as with your situation. The only error that I get is the 6701 serial link is down error.
Infrastructure:
Two buildings connected with an MPLS PRI resides in the building where the problem is occuring
I am out of ideas, so any that you have will certainly be appreciated.
