1) I would buy a display telephone
2) your system is old, but if it functions, why replace it
3) Instead of replacing the battery, you could just plug the system into a half-decent computer battery back-up from Staples or Ofice Depot. The system takes very little power to function and one should be able to keep the system up for a at least a few hours.
4) Get the manual
5) Or, find a new technician who is willing to work on this system, ask them before they come in if they are familiar with the system.

Good advice, Paul. I too advise:
1. Buy a UPS or battery BackUp
2. Purchase a Display phone--check
out equipment link on this site
3. Purchase a manual
4. Do NOT try buying the battery then soldering it to the main board--unless you are a decent solderer and feel comfortable with it. It's not really that hard, but it is a hassle. Much less trouble to buy the UPS and be done with it. If you have the manual and the display set---then no matter what happens---you're good to go. Also--the UPS will help with surges & spikes. Good Luck.
