I work with Cisco products every day and I didn't realize Cisco gave away their updates for free.

Sounds like there are two problems here.

The dealer who installed the equipment and now you not wanting to work with a reputable dealer to fix the issue. I’m sure most dealers would be happy to work with you to fix the issues. Instead you choose replace perfectly good equipment because you don’t understand it.

What would have been the more cost effective solution for the customer?

Just for considerations, there's some new update 1.8.2 for the WiFi SMT-5100 out , its in test/beta state and should be fixing some batterie-lifetime of the wifi ...
