We have taken over a Samsung 7100 that has its share of quirks, the most notable being that it has 3 bad digital station ports. There is one bad port on the digital station card installed on the Mp10a card, and 2 more on 2 seperate cards on the UNI card in slot 1 of the Officeserv. The customer is mulling over fixing these, my question is, is this a hardware thing, something you all have seen before? Or could this be a software thing, the software is old I believe its 4.30

"old" software would not be a cause.
Have you powered the system down and plugged directly into the port after that?
Rare you would have a bad digital port, and you have a 5 year warranty from Samsung, so most likely you are under warranty anyway.
Also, go into 724 and make sure someone has not mucked with the numbering and killed it.

With that many ports dead i would backup the database, default and see if they start working.
Check 108 to see what device type the systems thinks that port is. I have seen bad databases report DLIs as KDB-S etc.

Follow the advise from TelephoneSystemsDirect. Try it in default first.
By any chance are the extns on these ports in the same area / serviced by the same cable back to the pbx?
If the default (and plugging a phone direct into the port on the kit) proves faulty hardware, could storm damage (lightning) have hit the common cable.
I've had a lightning strike take down ports over different cards before in the above scenario.

if you connect a tone generator while the cable is still connected to the DLM it will blow the port. I have seen this happen with some our less experience Tech

What? How could a tone generator blow a port? It has almost zero volts at almost zero amps.
And, Samsung has a five year warranty so if it is bad, send it back.

I have just had a DLI card go out due to power surges, all four ports, the other eight okay. So it can happen.

Here is a quick check for a dlm. Look for the blackened thermistors on the board. The older ones use a small rectangle green one and the newer ones use a yellow one that looks like a tand cap. If they meter much more then 8 ohms you have a problem.
