I just picked up a windows 7 notebook and I understand I need to load hyperterminal because it's not free anymore. I've been told I will need to get a new USB to serial adapter that is compatible with Windows 7. I should mention that this is to connect to the older SVMi cards. Is there another way to do this? Any suggestions?

I'm using W7 starter edition on my netbook and a Belkin FS509 adapter that I picked up on E-Bay for less than two cups of coffee. It works like a charm.
The adapter isn't you issue though as most are somewhat reliable. You need a terminal emulation program. Have you tried Googling "Terminal Emulation Software" to see what is out there? You may be surprised.

Just copy the hyperterminal files from win xp
Or use putty (i had to use it on a cadence the other day).
You will need to change some settings from default in putty if you want to use it.
Only thing you have to watch with usb-serial, is that each usb port will come up as a different com port.

Any downside to using Windows 7?
I just picked up a Netbook today with Windows 7 starter Edition that I want to use for "Just" programming systems Etc. after I realized there wasn't hyperterminal (i downloaded it) I started thinking Ah crap...lol
I really don't want to spend another $119.00 to upgrade to Win 7 pro just for the XP mode if I don't have to, it kind of defeats the purpose of buying a $250.00 Netbook except I'm likng the size and weight of the little booger.

The only thing that I have needed XP mode for (so far) is the system admin program for NEC DS1000/2000 systems.

I haven't found anything that I can't do under win7, I even have the old DCS PCMMC running, IE9 will be a pain when 4.6 software and OSDM comes out as the embedded version doesn't seem to work with IE9
