I am sorry to hear that. I hope your water works in the morning, because if it doesn't and you complain to Verizon, they will tell you "it mus be sumpin wrong with yo PBX". That FIOS service isn't taking off around here at all and I am surprised. Most people jump on any new technology offerings, but maybe Verizon has just done such a fine job of showing their expertise over the past few years that customers are seeking alternatives.
I have only seen one site where fiber to the desktop was actually used and it was in a factory where some remote process controller needed to report to the manager's computer. Just a point to point connection, but it was 1,800 feet away. We still just used media converters, I have never seen fiber NICs installed in computers for any of our customers.

When I was taking my fiber night school training back a few years ago, there was a guy there that worked for a fiber research company. They were working on a fiber "Y" cord that would be fusion spliced in at the road to bring it into individual residences. When he first told me this I thought he was joking. Splitting light beams, imagine, but he brought one in to show us. He said it would require re-boosting the source many times along the way. Pretty cool stuff, haven't seen it being used yet. Their claim was fiber would be brought into multiple individual houses in the future.

It will simply come down to cost. When fiber becomes competitive with copper; that will dictate the change. Mining sand is easier than mining copper. I've seen C.O. equipment that runs on a single fiber. TX and RX are frequency keyed. Fiber, although it be plastic, is pretty common between receivers and DVD players and the like already.
The funny thing is, Verizon doesn’t even offer DSL on my current pots lines with them.
So, when Verizon is done putting fiber to my door will I need to add a DSL filter to my reverse osmosis system too? Will I be able to use water bottles to store data?

No don't use water bottles to store data . The byte bucket works much better and is easier to empty .

FIOS is taking off big here. Lots of people dumping Cablevision broadband.
As far as promotion, Verizon has special red vans with a big FIOS logo. Believe it or not they have Hummer H2's also! (Well, this is the land of the rich.)
The FIOS side of Verizon around here is looking more and more like a cable company and that is what they will also be providing in a couple of months.
I for one will be happy to see them give Cablevision a run for their money. Gee, maybe the Dolans will have to sell the Knicks to pay some bills.

Heh...
I almost had to try to learn to terminate fiber in a place we subcontract for. Now I have never terminated it before, and the first time you try it is not the time to learn it...
But then, when you're in the soup, you just have to swim.
But we called the end location and it's [b]not[b/] fiber, but just Cat 5e and Coax that may need pulling/terminating.
The fact that the place is about 2.5 hours away also makes me breathe a sigh of relief!

Here in Eastern Massachusetts, Verizon has been rolling out FIOS in selected towns (not the one I live in). Not sure how well it has been selling.
