I do alot of custom cords.I have no trouble with them and thats because I test them (fluke dtx-1800 12 sec. test time).I can make a rack look great. What gets me is the IT's and lazy installers that want to put in 7ft or 10ft patch cords and only need 4ft and put the rest in the managent system. It makes for an ugly closet. But keep it up and I can come back fix it for you.

I used to make my own patch cords, but I now go the "buy them" route. Its true that using cords that are too long can look messy, but on the other hand, if the need to move components around arises (making room for a new piece of equipment for instance) having that slack can be the difference between using those existing patch cords and having to make (or buy) all new ones. (I do have a supply of stranded 5E and connectors for use in a pinch. ).

Depends on the job...I use factory made whenever possible.
Sometimes though, you just need that Crossover or need to make a straight-through phone cable!

Greetings, guys. First post here.
Factory made patch cords are your ticket. Field assembled patch cords went out of style with C5.
Nowadays, most cabling solutions will not offer the extended warranty unless it is an end-to-end solution. This includes the patch cords at each end to complete the channel.
Furthermore, with data rates increasing to gigabit, and now 10 Gig, rates, manufacturing quality is as important as ever. You can seriously affect a link's performance by having inconsistent and/or sub-par pin contacts or crimps.
