What's up fellas. I am just starting out as a cable tech for a small company out of Fla. that has set up here in Austin, TX. We have been contracted out by Time Warner to install cable, and digital phone service is a big part of the workload being offered. As I have never done this before (I worked on an oil rig for some years), I am trying to find websites, other techs, or any ways to learn how to work on in-home (MDU/SFD) installation and wiring. Any suggestions on where to start? Unfortunately, my training on this was short and not very in-depth, but I want to succeed at this. Thanks to all who can help, and here's to the working man being successful. Feel free to post responses or email me directly. Much appreciated.

I've never worked on the cable services, but what I've read, they just put a new NID next to the old and use the existing inside wire.

Welcome to the board Btrip. welcome

Btrip, I also just discovered this forum, and after 23 years as a cabling contractor, I realize how much I still don't know! It's nice to be able to ask other professionals and find out what really works. I have worked with some Charter Cable installers this year, and have seen them install "500" cable, RG11, and my company has been putting in some RG6 to remodeled low-income apartments. Some of the older units just had RG59. Charter told us that it wouldn't support the higher bandwidths and features. Is that true?

True to a large extent, but I want YOU to tell us why. wink You said you wanted to learn.

OK Hal - perhaps the wimpy RG59 was not shielded enough?(like the quad-shielded RG6). I really can't say that I know for sure. I would like to find out.

The RG6 is probably rated to a higher frequency - 2GHz or 3 GHz for the better quadshielded

I'm a couple of days late in welcoming you, but let me also say that this is a great place to learn from. Welcome to the board, from another new guy who just found this recently.
