We got a set of poles by Labor Saving Devices. These are (I think) 12-4' snap-together fiberglass sections, 3/4" or so in diameter. There's an "eggbeater" attachment for the end that lets you roll or even crawl up small sections of wall. These weren't exactly cheap, but it gets us over 50' at a clip across drop ceilings. We also picked up the thinner rods, about 3/16" diameter, like the Greenlee. I still use a roll of tape tied to Jet Line, too!

grider; I hear ya. Everything I loose or break is expensive. That's why I carry $5 pliers that are so cheap they don't even line up properly - because I know I'll never loose them!

And for the record, I'm not cheap, I'm economical smile Need to make sure I have tools that I won't loose and/or break.

I use a set of 3/16" x 5' fiberglass sticks with the same problem of fiberglass splinters. Until I had a brainstorm, cover them in electrical tape, I used yellow and orange so they can be seen a little easier. It only took a minute, loaded one end into my drill, had a helper hold the drill, and just had to hold a roll of tape on an angle and move it along as it spun, did a set of 6 in under 5 minutes.

For about $20 you can get a crappie pole. A few additions (I put a pulley on the end and filled the end cap with epoxy), you have a great way to pull cable.

Gopher poles are great too!

In the "Good old Days" we used to make similar devices as the cable caster. My favorite was a wooden slingshot with a zebco 202 reel screwed to it. Then came regulations and we had to start tying up our cables. We have tried R/C cars, bow and arrows, slingshots, dart guns and poles and rods. The best I've found is a Gopher pole or glo-rods. Well worth the price.

For fishing walls, a piece of heavy chain about 1' long tied to jet line or preferably mule tape works wonders around insulation.

I own and use the Greenlee Fish Sticks. They are not as thin and flexible as some of the others I have seen, but they work great for fishing ceilings. I have used the thinner Glow Rods, such as what Labor Saving Devices makes. Greenlee also has a nice 25 foot flat fish tape. I have one as well.
