Folks I am stupid, but not that stupid. One end of the wires is run back to a box where they will connect into my eventual TV and sound system. Does this device that people are talking about work if one end of the wire is exposed and a person is trying to find the other end?

Oh by the way, my wife is the type that will throw ANYTHING that is not nailed down away. Over the years, this schematic drawing would just be the tip of the iceberg. Thank you for all of your responses. Any help is appreciated.

if you have one end of the wire then yes you clip the tone on it and trace the wire with the probe and hopefully find the other end or at lest come close .

(if you had saved your drawing to your hardrive you wouldn't be blaming the wifey for losing it smile )

Most standard toners use the same basic principal: Like Skip said, the actual toner is the "small box". Clip the leads from the toner on to the end of your your wire, then turn the toner on (look for a flashing light), then take the probe, (most come with a button you have to push in), touch the wire with the end of the probe while pushing the button in, and you should hear the tone from the small speaker on the probe. Then simply follow the "tone" along the wall using the probe. Hopefully the wire is pretty close to the other side of the wall. Both the toner and the probe normally require 9V batteries.

tip here , clip one lead from the tone to the wire , clip the other to a good earth ground and the signal will be much stronger
