...and its purpose:

It (and 15 of its friends) are hanging off the back of my 556a PBX cordboard.

Not that I have your answer, but I really can't see it good enough to even guess.

Wasn't that referred to as a "Winchester" connector?

Ding-ding-ding, Jeff wins the free 30-day trip for ten to Aruba! I knew it wasn't the Winchester connector almost as soon as I posted my guess, but I just couldn't remember who's it was. I think Jeff got it (this time). [Linked Image from 4wd.com]

Purpose? Why to mate with the opposite sex connector, of course!
Beyond that, you're gonna need the schematic for your PBX. Weren't these cordboards site specific for each customer. Some general stuff was the same, but specific sites had specific needs that made each board just a liiitttllleee bit diferent. Kinda like the customer specific programming on today's key systems and epbx's!

Yep, that's what the old-timer tech here at work called it. Of course upon looking that up, I find that refers to pretty much any giant boxy connector with any number of pins in it.

As durable as they are, I'm thinking they must be whatever connected this board to its parent PBX. Without my schematic I'm not even sure yet I'll need to worry about them, but it would be nice to have the opposite gender connector in case I need to attach them to something.

Silent 700

your user name brings back memories , I remember being really proud of the first one I had and being even prouder a few years later to replace it with a portable pc (before the laptop days ) so I didn't generate reams of thermal paper as I programed

yeah, Cinch Jones is not very descriptive unfortunately. I have mostly seen it on old school theater dimming/control systems.
