Working on a quote for a 5 story building. The spec says "3 3/4 inch x 6 inch x 12 inch ground bars, 18 holes per bar" OK, so does each ground bar need a ground rod? Can one 8 foot ground rod suffice for all three and we just daisy chain them together with 4 gauge cable?

Might be a good idea to check with sparkie and have him help you land the first ground from a point that he designates and then you will be tying all points back to that first location.

FiberTech has a good idea there....sparkie knows the best ground. A lot of manufacturers require a separate ground from the MGN to the equipment...or ground bar. Depending on where you are in CA you may need mag bags to get a good ground...so check with sparkie.

Good luck.

I would say that you are way off base if you think ground rods are needed. Ground bars are connected to the MGN at the building electrical service entrance. Get with a competent sparkie on this.

What they said. It's actually a violation of the NEC to have independent grounding means within the same structure. Everything metallic within the building must be bonded back to the MGC. There are really no exceptions to this rule unless you are working in a facility or area where the NEC is not enforced.

Yep, my mistake. We are getting a quote from an electrician.
