I was reading through the thread and waiting to make the same comment on residential.

We rearely do residential (business owners houses usually), but when we do T&M... always.

Way too many variables in house architechture and not as many restrictions (i,e, - Danny DIY, or Randy re-model, etc. smile ) you get the point.

We usually do a flat price per cable (includes jack/plate/caddy's/etc.) and add labor, but sometimes a customer wants a different pricing structure and we will work with them.

No reason to run CAT5e for phone, unless specified by architecht/phone vendor, as Cat3 will do fine.

For commercial I prefer to have dual Cat5e ran incase the tenant wants IP Phones vs. TDM Phones. Charge more up front but don't have to re-cable when they want latest and greatest.

Residential I don't see much the point for dual Cat5e unless you just want the peace of mind.

Well residential new construction...you could charge by the drop potentially. Old construction...just way too many variables. I'm sure many of us have had to spend 2 hours running a single cable in an older house.

Even when it's new construction, it still takes more time and effort to do residential cabling. You'll spend a lot more time dealing with vapour barriers and insulation, drilling holes, trying to get around HVAC, etc. The one plus is that you're not normally dealing with a homeowner with new construction. The homeowner generally can't see why they should pay you more than they themselves make per hour.

I also called around today and....WOW.......everybody is charging per hour all over the place. And same for cable....any real standard. I mean cat5e is like XXXXX a box of 1000/ft so I guess the XXXXXX a foot around here is a good mark up I suppose......

We refuse all calls for residential work unless it is brand new construction and they have one side of the wall up aiting for the inspector. So we never deal with private parties they simply do not understand nor are they willing to learn the reasons why things costs what they do.

FWIW we charge XXX dollars per drop and that includes pulling, termination, labelling and testing. Customer gets a wire verification report always. That is per drop, even if we are pulling two cables or more at each box. Extra is the patch panels, jacks and faceplates. We work on T&M so we pay the sales tax up front and don't have to mess around with a resellers permit.

It sounds like a lot but we have XX% overhead on just employees. Every buck we pay them costs us half again that much in costs. Their insurance is killing us and was just raised another XXX bucks a month. Fuel is murder and we're going to be paying a lot more for other insurance and bonding.

Hey all thanks for the input here. Don't forget we're in the open forum and although we'd like to post our expenses and try to show why cost are what they are, let's not post pricing. Thanks.
