I have 6 Cat5e and 12 strands of fiber (50 micron multi-mode) between the computer room and a telecommunications closet. Need more connections. It was suggested that we pull more copper. I was preparing to do it and then remembered this fiber. Why not utilize it? All I need is a transceiver(s), right? Is there a rack mount unit that would have multiple transceivers? Any brand to look for? Any to avoid?

If you want to go fiber all you need is a transceiver on both ends and then those go into the switches. Many higher end switches are modular and you can install multiple fiber cards/blades. The HP ProCurve series is a good choice and one I prefer.

The new word is "media converter" Usually they come as single units but the fiber blades in the switches are the best! My $.02.

There are units which have a chassis that fit about 8-12 of the individual units. This allows them to share the same power transformer and cleans the rack up. I have never used these, but did price an additional one for an existing unit. At $375 needless to say I didn't buy it.
