Have not bought one of these in a while...
The splitters that you plug in at each end of a cable run to split out the orange and green pairs for one device and the blue and brown for another device.
Yes, I know they are not recommended for long term use. This will be for instances where someone moves to an area and need two data cables and there is only one. So, until I can install the additional cable I can use the splitters to get them working.

Why didn't they plan ahead and make sure the proper infrastructure was in place?

We run into this kind of stuff a lot. They like to turn patient rooms into offices. We use the 3-com Intellijack switches. https://www.3com.com/products/en_US...pathtype=purchase&sku=WEBBNCNJ220SYS
they are very handy in those temp situations or until you can get Cable pulled.

I'd go the etherswitch route myself. A decent little Netgear will run you all of 35 bucks and they are very handy when a customer needs it now and you can't pull new cable right away. I've even loaned out APs and USB wireless adaptors.

Excellent advice all. I really appreciate all the links. The splitters appear to be a little cheaper but more time consuming when it's all said and done. I'll go with a small hub.
