We have been having some issues with our phones since the recent storms. We have Comdial DX-80's. Right now my phone says it's 2:00 when it is actually 9:27 and my name is spelled TAJMY when it really is TAMMY. Sometimes there are "*" on the screen. The only way I have found to fix this is to turn the system off and back on. As I am typing this the display has corrected itself to show the correct name and time. Any ideas what is causing this? Is it time to start looking for a new system?

I meant to add, in addition to this issue lights will be turned on for no apparent reason. We come in from the weekend and one of the user lights will be lit, but nobody is here. This is all so strange.

Tammy:
Do you have the system on a UPS?? You may have corrupted data on your CPU and what it needs is a "cold restart". Have your Comdial technician come in and do that. It's solves a lot of CPU problems.

Hopefully that is all that is necessary. If the CPU card is bad due to electrical surges and spikes---it will need to be replaced and the system would need to be re-programmed. If you have a technician come in, then he can at least download your database onto his laptop---so the re-programming would be less time-consuming possibly.

You might want to check the power supply!

It's a CPU issue, I've seen it a lot here in lightening season. If the cold start and reload doesen't do it, and it usually doesn't in my experience, I replace the whole CPU with the latest software installed. In my area some sites are 100 miles away, those I just replace because the travel cost if I need to come back is worse then the cost of new board.

It is the CPU. So here's my next question... I want to weigh our options, we are a small office. 3 employees, 5 phones, 3 phone lines. If we opt to not replace the CPU with a refurbished one...what system would you techie guys recommend? The company we work with has recommended Toshiba, but I wanted a 2nd+ option. As always, I appreciate your help and thank you. Tammy

Hmm. Using the $1K + 200 rule of thumb, why would you want to replace the whole system instead of just buying a new KSU, especially when it's less than $600 in anybody's arena?

There are plenty of reputable dealers, check on this forum, that will replace your system.

The reason we are considering replacing the whole system is it is 10+ years old, has been discontinued and we got it second hand. Just trying to weigh all of our options.

Partner ACS's have been discontinued, Nortel ICS have been discontinued, they still sell well in the secondary market. A functional phone system with CID, single line ports, carded 4x8x2 out of the box is not "obsolete" if it still does what you want it to do. Today, I just upgraded a Partner 3.1 to a Partner ACS 8, gaining them CID and remote maintenance. They had 2 lines, 8 phones, paging and a stand alone fax machine.
It ws pretty simple, label and unplug the existing cables, then plug them into the new cabinet. No training necessary.
