Is there a distance limit on extending a dsl line? Got a customer who ordered dsl, the at&t tech said the dsl works fine at MPOE but the distance to where it needs to be extended to is too far, it's 300'-400'.
I know there's a distance limit from the CO to wherever, and that may be the distance he's talking about, but i was wondering about distance from MPOE to modem location.

I suppose, in theory, that you could be that close to the maximum distance. Hook your modem up closer to the MPOE and see if it works. If it does, go from there.

Quality of the wire and wire gauge also matters.

I think you will have more of a problem with CAT 5 and up than CAT 3 because of the increased inter-conductor capacitance. As Dave says, unless you are right on the edge a few more hundred feet of CAT 3 or CAT nothing should make no difference. We have always said that CAT 5 should not be used for DSL.

What Hal, Dave & Hawk said.
There's a distance limitation from the CO, and as the distance increases the maximum speed decreases, but....
What's 300' more? Especially on good cable.
Follow Dave's advice - put the modem and the computer at the demarc and test from there. If it doesn't work there, it'll never work for you. If it does work there, then test your cable going out to the customer's premise.

Don't need to place the computer there. Your lights should tell you if you're "in sync" or not. If yes, then I'd hook up a laptop. If all is good at that point, then you could run ONE cat 5e to wherever your router is and then you're in business.

Problem is that the 300-400 feet is in excess of the maximum ethernet length. Will work but strictly speaking is not something that should be done.
I'm willing to bet that the cable is already CAT 5 and therein lies the problem.

AT&t said it works at the MPOE but won't work where it needs to be because of distance limitations, he tried to extend it.
The cabling tying closets in that building is all cat3, that's the cable that it's been extended on unsuccesfully. He probably didn't try hard enough, I'll go out there, confirm it's good at MPOE, then start troubleshooting. Changing pairs, trying modem at first closet etc...
Running one cable from the MPOE to the phone/data room is a two-day/two man job at the least, so we're gonna have to work with what they got.
Thanks...

If the client wants DSL bad enough they'll pay the price for "a two-day/two man job". If not re-introduce them to dialup.
