We have new HVAC software to control systems in multiple buildings. The HVAC guys are, at one location, spending a lot of time climbing the ladder as they go back and forth from the roof top units to the server and hardware. Are there network boxes that are good for outdoor installations? We can easily get cable to the roof through existing penetrations, but I am wondering about the box and jacks. I googled a little on outdoor/exterior network and couldn't find much, probably not using the right description. Thanks

The easiest way is to install the jack in a rain-tight box. I have seen a lot of damage to cables that are just laying across a roof-top and not protected in conduit.
Try Googling: "Rain-Tight Electrical boxes"
This should send you in the right direction.

Hope you're using exterior rated cable and protection devices!

I have moved the modem and serial connection several times that does exactly what you are talking about,it controlled 1 10 story building and a remote four story building, although the control units were located in (10) air handler rooms in 1 building ,and the four story was a single room, the energy management system worked real well.

The jacks themselves would be typical jacks but you would enclose them in an outdoor enclosure. Try looking for Outdoor NEMA enclosures and you'll find what you need. https://www.l-com.com/productcenter.aspx?id=552

I would just use a standard single-gang weatherproof receptacle box, a Decora insert and a weatherproof GFI receptacle cover.

Thanks for the replies. We will go with an outdoor raintight box, and put it in sheltered place. I was thinking there might be outdoor rated jacks, but that won't matter if we use the proper enclosure. Thanks again!
