Remember you have to cut the clips on BOTH ends (if the jack is exposed). But how about ordering half modular line cords (one side spade tipped) and hardwiring the phone that way. It's a lot neater and a lot more professional.

Sam, I was actually planning on cutting the jack off of one end and screwing them into the the surface mount box. How do you take the phone apart to get to the screw terminals inside the phone? I thought that inside the phone it was soldered in. That will make it so much easier to make one continuous line from the wall to the phone. Well, it won't be continuous but screwed in and useless if they take the phone.

is there a secret to taking the phones apart or is it just snap on. (ie stick a flathead between the top and bottom sections and twist)

You have to tell us what brand/model of phone. A standard 2500 desk phone has 2 screws on the bottom and you can't miss them. Offhand, I'd guess the phones at least 'look cool' or they wouldn't be leaving!

I don't know about the rest of the criminals in the audience, but if I were about to steal a $20 phone from a motel, to feed my drug addiction, I would not be thwarted by a stinkin' modular plug that had been clipped.

I would take my O. J. Simpson signature-series switchblade knife or my cocaine-cutting razor blade and just cut the cord.

How about a big lag bolt up through the desk top, and into the base of the phone?

Or how about a 4-wire cord, with the yellow and black shorted inside the phone, then the 2nd pair in the inside wire run through the MDF to an alarm panel? Cut the cord, or unplug the set, the alarm activates, and the telephone security guard responds to the room, effecting an arrest?

Or how about buying those disposable phones that are now handed to hospital patients as they are admitted? They cost about ten bucks.

I would imagine that if someone wanted the phone bad enough theyll take it regradless of how its mounted.

There really was a time when I was asked, as an AT&T tech, to do a similar arrangement to detect the theft of telephones in a public area.

It was a famous hotel in Manhattan, and the phones were specially ordered. They walked as fast as we could install them.

The extra pair in the mounting cord came in handy for the detection circuit, which was a bunch of phones in series to a relay, then to a buzzer in the security office. We caught the guy who was stealing the phones. Guess who? That's right...one of the security guards!

After all that (from what I can see) all one would need to do is pull hard, or cut the line and the phone is still gone.
