I was wondering what would be a good/reasonably priced piece of test equipment to invest in. I just have a cable tester STM-8.I know ther are different ones with different prices .I would like to get something that certifies Coper as well as test fiber
weather its 2 seperate pieces or one that does both .I am just curious what you guys are using

Thanks

If you're looking for certification, I think you're going to be looking at some serious money. I've always used a Wirescope 350 and like it. It has a variety of fiber modules available (MM, SM). I've used a friend's unit when I needed it, but have been looking at e-bay for a used unit. I've been pretty lucky with the equipment I've bought there.

We use the Fluke DTX 1800 for certification on all copper and fiber.

In my personal bag I use the STM-8 and use A,B,C,D (much faster than just the A)

Ive got two STM 8 units one with A module and one with A,B,C,D modules. Good reliable units thet locate 95% of any problems.I like the one with the 4 plugs cause it will give you lengths.

That's what I have been using the STM-8 with A,B,C,D they work great .I was just curious sometimes I have calls that say they are having issues and when I check the cable it test fine but I dont think that the same as certifing the cable I was thinking of getting something to certify the cable and also fiber .I ocasionally run the preterminated fiber and never really know until they use it (just for piece of mind )
I was looking at DTX 1800 ($$$)but I guess thats what they cost

Thanks!

I replaced my STM-8 with Testum Lanscaper a long time ago....The Lanscaper has done a great job of wire wapping, continuity checking and it will verify a run for data. It has its own ip, will use DHCP as well. It also blinks ports on a switch, hub or router. However it will only verify up to 100meg data runs. In conjuction with the Lancaster I use the early version of the Real World Certifier (yes I know it is really a qualifier) which will test for and measure data speeds up to a gig.

I plan on upgrading to the Fluke Cable IQ Qualification tester. It qualifies up to a gig, including POE and voip. It comes with 8 remotes, and all test results can be downloaded to a pc and printed. The kit includes a probe as well.

Yes serios money. Do what I did, google "craigslist search" there should be two top search engines that do US wide searches. Then type in comscope 350. After that, find a very good deal with the seller, and agree to set up a account with escrow.com. Deposit money into escrow.com and seller will see this, and will send unit to you. Ask in the instructions to test for 2 days. After you agreed it works as advertised, release the money. It is a great service.

Good luck

Another vote for the Fluke DTX 1800
This is a fantastic piece of equipment that we have used since it was first released. Certifies cables very quickly and does fiber with the fiber add on module

By the way, since it was so expensive, we leased it with a dollar buy out option
