Hello,

I have an IP40 phone switch with the 16-key handsets. It works great, but I've uncovered a problem with voicemail notification. The voicemail notification for my own handset works great. But if I program a soft key to monitor another voicemail box, I don't get a notification when messages go into that voicemail.

Additionally, if a message is in the voicemail box and I re-program the key to monitor the box, I DO get a notification once the key is re-programmed.

Any thoughts? Is this a known bug in ESI's voicemail system?

Turns out voicemail boxes can only be monitored if they have a handset with the matching extension. For example, if you want to monitor mailbox 100, you must have a handset programmed as extension 100.

Instead of deleting this topic, I thought I'd post the answer in case someone else runs across this behavior.

Are you referring to a virtual mailbox button, where you program a button to flash when someone else's mailbox get messages, or are you referring to (cell phone) message notification? If message notification, that would need to be setup in that particular mailbox.

Is this a new problem? Because on the older ESI systems you could have a MB notification of about any mailbox.

Yes, I'm talking about a virtual mailbox button.

I am allowed to program the notification, but the button does not light up reliably unless there is a handset with that extension. YMMV

Did you try and just program that button on the phone manually?

Yes. If there is a way to program the buttons any other way, I haven't found it yet.

Did I understand you correctly that you are trying to program a virtual mailbox button for a phone that is not connected? That is either not going to work, or is not going to work reliably. Why not use a guesst mailbox instead, then do a virtual mailbox button for that guest mailbox? Guest mailboxes are specifically used to provide mailboxes for those who don't have a physical extension assigned. They and the virtual mailboxes are made for each other. We use them all the time for general mailboxes. For example, we setup guest mailbox 300 as the general mailbox, then put a virtual mailbox button on extension 100. This also allows the receptionist to have a mailbox that is separate from the general mailbox.
