Have a CS-50 site, at the original install the 48 key phones had crazy things happening on the displays while in the process of making a call, the only way to clear this was to unplug phone & plug it back in. Tech support said it was a problem with 0451 serial # phones & so sent me 0290 serial # phones, this cleared the problem, but I am still getting this problem although way less frequent on one extension.

Is this the closest phone to the phone system? If it is then you can get a replacement phone from ESI that is made for short cable runs.

The phone that is still playing up is the closest to the system aprox 50ft, I replaced the wiring run & made sure it was not run near to any source of RF or EMF. They have a light engineering shop out back, but they don't do any welding..................

You can try what nonameyet suggested, adding some extra footage to the cable run at the MDF, is the cable twisted pair, or is it old quad cable?

Found It!! Been down this road! In the thread I linked the problem system and phones ended up being in my possession. I never encountered the problem described but many have and the solution ended up being the creation of a 50ft bridge clip.

using Cat5e cable punched down on a 66 block,
Before I install an ESI system on site, I test a 48key phone in all digital ports before it leaves my office, i.e the distance from the system to the phone is only a 2 ft bit of 25pr cable & I never have any issues, so why does the phone then do this with 50 ft of field cable between phone & box?

Many a system I have connected a "harmonica" right on the side and there was no cabling other than the line cord. Never had a problem and can't explain why this has happened to others in the past.

Earlier this year ESI "quietly" rolled out the 451 series telephone. It was a replacement that solved a manufacturing issue in the existing phone that made telephones on long or poor cable runs respond poorly (VM lite wouldn't light, phone would not update display and keys correctly). We beta tested a ton of these at a few school sites with long runs on very old cable. The problem became that if you had one of these new "super"phones on a short cable run and in the right conditions (whatever they are) the have display like you have. We've had a few do it too, and we replaced them with the older 290 style phones or added some cable length if needed. As Grider mentioned, he's got one that had similar issues that I swear were caused by a faulty digital cordless on the system.... but that was never confirmed.
