auto mode.
Incoming call, after 3rd ring caller hears modem/fax type sounds.
when i tested by calling in, it will happen on every other call.
auto attendant is set to pick up after 5th ring.

No external fax machine telephone line is hooked into the esi system.

There are no computer modems on site.

what cards are in the system?

It is possible that one of the analog ports are set to FAX.

disconnect the line form the system, call it to see if the trouble clears or not. If it doesn't clear, then then it's probably an alarm or unknown modem.

Is this line hooked up to a RJ31X & used for an alarm also? Sometimes those alarm panels will pick up & put a fax type tone on the line. If so you can move the alarm to a different tel #. I have seen alarms pick up when you dial a #, let it ring for a few times, hang up & dial again & the alarm picks up on the first ring sounding like a fax machine.

I'll bet my dollar that it is the security system modem. Does this happen on all lines or just 1 line?

This is typically called "answering machine defeat". I agree, this is most likely the issue. Find a new line to connect the security system to. Make sure you inform the central station that the alarm was moved to a new line!

Thank you all for your help.

It was the alarm panel!

We switched lines and all is working fine.
