We have a Nortel SL1 that has been in service since 1988, same ST cabinet and software. It was just last year that we finally retired the QSU sets and the metal cabinet. If we ever do get a new system, and we sell the old one, just for laughs we're also selling it under "antiques and collectibles".

But you're right: the phones are built to last and they continually do everything you need them to, whereas a workstation is obsolete as soon as you open the box it came in.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it, or replace it. We still have Rolm 9000 and 9751 systems under maintenace contracts, mainly large multinode systems in universities, hospitals, and the like. The cost of replacing those systems is really high, so they tend to stay as long as possible. In fact, as long as I have a supply of parts, I can keep them running indefinatly. Smaller key systems get replaced far more often, but mainly due to upgrades or expansion in general.

I have a customer that is still using system 25's at 4 locations, they just keep working.
But parts are becoming an issue both in price and whats out there.

Hey Coral Tech,

Do you have any idea where I can find info about applying programming changes to Sprint Coral switches in an automated fashion, i.e. not one at a time through the CLI.

Either the Coral View administrator OR the Coral View designer are GUI. I prefer the CLI and find it much quicker and easier. Especially after you learn all the easy ways to hop around.

Just got a large box of Vodavi 61612 and 61614 from a large end user with multiple locations for repair and refurb. My guess is thay will still be using them 10 years from now if they can keep getting parts.

I got a call from the company that handles telcom for a large national restaurant chain. Seems they were opening a brand new high end restaurant near here and they needed someone local to install the phones and KSU. All they said was that it is an AT&T system. I almost died when I got there and saw a Merlin 820D2 and a bunch of BIS phones. To top it off it didn't work and I wound up swapping cards with my own.

I can't believe that anybody would consider something like that in a new install. Not like they didn't have the money.

I think that the legacy Merlin has pretty much reached the end of the line since all you are likely to get is something that has been refurbished many times over.

I used to do similar work for another outfit that handled Old Navy, Gap and others. They at least install Partner Plus and MLS phones. Not like they don't have the money either.
