I have never been impressed with Google as a search engine. Recently I entered these search words into Bing & Google for comparison.

ESI-Phone Systems-Installation-Florida

From Bing I actually saw my own website on the first page along Lanecomm & Phonesol respective companies.

From Google I get massive overload and get 4 pages of results before finding an actual Florida ESI Dealer. Never did find myself, Steve or Jim's old place.

Guess if you pay Google you get better results. Never heard of Bing but then again I lead a sheltered life.

I believe I heard that Bing will seach and pull from your area as well as bring up the most used sites. Bing is supposed to have some type of local search intelligence that Google doesn't offer. I have been trying to use both to see which I like better. So far, I find myself migrating toward Google.

I just tried it looking for my company. I get the usual list of crap and I'm nowhere to be found. At least with Google I'm there someplace. I think you are an anomaly John.

If you have a favorite charity use Goodsearch. they donate $.01 for each search and a percentage if you purchase something online through them. check it out. www.goodsearch.com. we have our amateur radio club listed. Its not a lot, but hey its free money. they pay out at the end of the year.
otherwise I will use Google. Its our default search engine at work.

Tom, I used

ESI Telephone System Installation Florida

No commas or hyphens.

Maybe Rhonda is on to something with the location thing.

I tried COMSYSTEC also, Bing took me right to Hal's place. Google told me I spelled it wrong but offered it on page 1.

'GLC ESI florida'
The title of a page is a strong searchable key word....your title is GLC..a term no one will ever search for.

I'll change that next time I'm updating the site.

Most connections I have made via the www pipe is because of searchers finding Tech-Talk and then if they are ESI related they see me there.

I tried COMSYSTEC also, Bing took me right to Hal's place.

Anybody can do that when they already know the name. I'm looking for people that don't know me from a hole in the wall and search "phone systems, Westchester, New York" or something like that.

I used those exact search words on both search engines and went 5 pages deep, sorry Hal you are a no show.

Interesting: The google search did bring up 3 buyerzone.com sites to check out.

It's Microsoft which is enough reason for me to avoid it.

Where a site comes up is not neccesarily a fault of the search engine but more the web site design. Yes, there are sponsored links that appear high up but those are labeled and not part of the general links. In Hals case he can increase his rankings by making changes to his website. Heres some good tips on increasing your ranking.

I think Rhonda is on to something with the location thing...I did a "phone systems xxxxx" with xxxxx being zip code and we came up 1 and 3
on the two sites...so there is something to it...I tried a couple other zip codes and it changes everytime....

I like the travel search in Bing better then Google. If you search for plane tickets it gives more choices and better pricing.

Both Google and Bing do location-based queries when you use their search engines. Google has been offering local results for quite some time now, but the weak spot has always been getting your website listed in the local results.

The best way to get your business listed in Google for local searches is to sign up with their local business center here - https://www.google.com/local/add

Bing also offers a similar service through their local listing center here - https://ssl.bing.com/listings/ListingCenter.aspx

Beyond those 2 services it all comes down to how well your website is optimized for the respective search engines and keywords. A great way to evaluate your website is to use the tool at - https://www.websitegrader.com/

I've also left the world of business phone systems and moved into the web and graphic design and development field, so if anyone has additional questions feel free to contact me (link in my signature).
