Ok try to follow me here.. I have a standard windows VPN setup, remote pc at home VPN connected and works fine network wise. Install softphone on PC and it works, but it won't hangup. Why won't it hangup, what am I missing here??

More detail, when I click the hang up button on the softphone it takes about 30 secs then I get a "you have been disconnected from the switch" message.

Iwatsu is very picky about your path to the system. They prefer a hardware VPN using a client from the router manufacturer. I can't remember specifics but I had some issues with off prem extensions until I installed a Cisco VPN client for use with our Linksys VPN router.
If at first you don't succeed, try again before you call and piss off tech support!
